American League
EAST W L PCT GB HOME ROAD RS RA DIFF STRK L10 POFF
NY Yankees 84 50 .627 - 46-22 38-28 726 545 +181 Won 6 7-3 98.7
Tampa Bay 82 51 .617 1.5 43-26 39-25 659 517 +142 Won 1 7-3 98.1
Boston 76 58 .567 8 40-26 36-32 675 608 +67 Won 2 6-4 2.7

Yes boys and girls, we can start to count down the magic number for the Yankees to make the 2010 fall classic. Yes, the division title race will likely come down to the last week of the season but clinching a spot in baseball's second season is a foregone conclusion. Still, I'd like to officially begin the magic number countdown in honor of our Red Sox fan readers of which there are doubtless millions. So Without further adieu..........

Good evening fellow democrats, tea party anarchists, independents and radical socialists. Sorry if I missed anybody?  Sorry, I'm on a political kick right now. I highly recommend The Game Change. Yes, the authors clearly intentionally use esoteric words and feed into the liberal elitist label  put forth by the nut-jobs in the tea party. Sorry, now back to sports.

I decided , instead of being angry, bitter and upset, to actually discuss five things that are cool in sports this week. So without further adieu..........

Mike Tomlin is spending too much time with Ben Roethlisberger E-mail

I wonder how long it will take Roger "Fuhrer" Goodell to suspend Tomlin. I'm guessing a mandatory 4 game suspension for taking pictures with random jailbait. Hey, it's what Benji got right?

THIS IS NOT THE IMAGE THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE IS TRYING TO PORTRAY. Meanwhile, another Bengal got no suspension for beating his girlfriend and or driving under the influence. All is right with the world.

This really has been a truly terrible offseason. First Big Ben's nonsense, then trading Holmes, signing excrement like Larry Foote, Arnaz Battle and Antwan Randle El and now THIS.

This is like last year, when that no-talent assclown, Jake Gyllenhaal got a Steeler tramp stamp and sent the Steelers in a vomit-inducing 5 game plunge.

Photo after the jump. Ugh.

The United States of Mara: Giants training camp report E-mail

Mara

So the Ghost of Devo and I, you would know this if you follow our twitter page http://twitter.com/Straightupsport , went up to G-men camp Friday afternoon. We stayed overnight at the luxurious and lovely Days Inn and then woke up at the ass crack of 8am to go see the Saturday morning  practice. The main thing I took away from our time there was how it was the exact opposite of Jets camp in every conceivable way. As such, I felt it appropriate to title my Giant's report after a show on  Showtime, the main rival premium cable network of HBO, The United States of Tara (Mara).  If "Hard Knocks" is a show about a training camp filled with players with massive egos, lofty expectations, contract disputes and brash arrogance, the Giants training camp can be defined by its tranquility, cohesion,  hard work, and humility. Although I am very down on the Mara's for their PSL debacle, I have always loved the Giants for demanding class from its players and for expecting to win yet balancing this self confidence with respect for one's opponent and by living by the virtue, "speak softly and carry a big sick." The Jets seem to live by the virtue, "speak loudly and hope the stick you carry is big."  But enough about the clowns in Cortland. Here are some quick hitters about our time in Albany....

So this will certainly be a mere footnote on a day that is entirely about Alex's 600th home run. However, mere seconds later,  in the bottom of the 1st,

In the bottom of the 3rd inning of tonight's Jays/Yanks game, Brett "Gardy" Gardner beat out a ground ball to short stop by a country mile!!! Even these umps can't get that wrong can they??
