I have the utmost respect for the postseason prowess of Josh Beckett. I saw him throw the finest fall classic game ever by an opposing pitcher at Yankee Stadium. His 2003 complete game shutout in game 6 of the World Series was legendary. His performance in the 2007 postseason carried Boston to its 2nd title in a four year span. However, the Yankees have had his number since he has come to the Sox. There is a myth that he is a Yankee killer and that he owns the Yankees. Numbers don't lie and here they are....
2006: 9.45 ERA 2-2, 2.0 WHIP .304 Batting Average
2007: 4.39 ERA 2-1, 1.54 WHIP .303 Batting Average
2008: 3.25 ERA 3-1 , 1.05 WHIP .238 Batting Average
2009: 5.34 ERA 2-1, 1.34 WHIP .268 Batting Average
Taken together Beckett has a 5.33 ERA against the Yankees, an 8-5 record and a WHIP of about 1.43 or so (factoring his WHIP vs. New York of 1.48 from 2006-2008 and this year's WHIP of 1.34). So clearly Beckett has struggled mightily against the Yankees in his Red Sox career. John Lester scares me more than he does. I admit facing him in the post season is a little more frightening but lets not pretend that he has done well against the Yanks as a Red Sox hurler; he quite simply has not.
