Hockey Rumor Mongers E-mail
Written by Yinzer

Hockey is just like every other sport in that it has good and bad columnists. Because the NHL tends to be one of the more trade-happy leagues, hockey fans and writers LOVE to speculate on such things. The unfortunate side effect to this is that it spawns the rumor mongers- writers who just make up crap, or are idiotic and think things will happen and publish it as legitimate possibilities. But how do you know who is who? Well I’m here to tell you which of these hockey columnists you need to avoid when it comes to rumors, or articles in general.

Al Strachan

Strachan is the best of the worst. The guy just doesn’t have a whole lot of sense to him, and you wonder where he gets his angle from most of the time. He tries to do serious articles, and every once in a while he will have a decent one or make some valid points, but sometimes you read them and just can’t take them seriously from lack of a legitimate argument.

Bruce Garrioch

Garrioch is famous for his Radek Bonk exploits. For those that don't know, Bonk is a bottom line center who was forced into a top line role while with the Ottawa Senators. For about five years Garrioch said he was on the block, and when Bonk finally got dealt Garrioch went into weeks long celebrations of how he told you so. And this is the kind of things you can expect from him on a regular basis.

Larry Wigge

You might remember the former New York media writer who was eventually kicked to the curb for incompetence. Wigge basically just came up with random, nonsensical crap and pawned it off as writing. Today he writes for the NHL directly, which is a miff because all the hockey fans hate him. Oddly much of his ridiculous rumors have stopped since he got a job with the NHL and he isn’t talked about much anymore. Still, I wouldn’t really believe much of what he says.

Larry Brooks

Brooks is seen as one of two things: a guy that makes up stuff just to get attention, or a freaking retard. Sadly though as a writer for the Rangers, his entire focus for his rumors is always on them.  According to him every name free agent wants to come to New York. And best of all? The Rangers are apparently the only team that doesn’t have a cap, because it’s the only way they can sign all the players he claims will sign. For example two summers ago summer the Rangers were going to sign Marian Hossa, Ryan Malone, Brooks Orpik and Gary Roberts. In other words, nearly all of the Penguins free agents. Signing those guys alone would over a quarter of their cap, but somehow they would still have room to resign their players plus add in more free agents. Whether he is a firebrand to get attention to just a plain idiot, either way no one should take him seriously.

Eklund (Dwight Keith Klessel)

When it comes to lacking any kind of respect in hockey communities, Eklund is the main guy. Though his real name (in parenthesis above) is known to everyone, he still goes by this fictional name for the sake of anonymity. That he continues to post under an anonymous name when everyone knows who he is should give you a clue as to how dumb this man is. He says he hears rumors and posts them. That’s all well and good but he proceeds to say they’re legit and to be taken seriously. It has been pretty much proven though that he pulls a lot of stuff right out of his ass and even gets stuff from messages boards where posters make up deals for fun. Worst of all, when he does write an actual article, it’s so painful you wonder how any person who claims to like hockey so much can know so little and be so illogical. Truly, the man has shown such a lack of hockey knowledge you’re miffed when you read it. He still has yet to figure out that a player’s salary has to fit under a team’s cap for him to go there and when you’re coming up with rumors, that usually a good sign there is no basis to them. So bad is this man that often when he makes a rumor hockey fans assume the opposite, and they assume right. Don’t bother reading this man’s material, it will just make your head hurt.
