With Monday's announcement that Carlos Beltran has been put on the DL, the Mets now have three of their four star regulars unavailable to them. How did the team respond? By winning a big game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Tim Redding pitched a solid game. Alex Cora stepped up and got some big hits. Daniel Murphy hit a home run. Brian Stokes came in and got Albert Pujols to hit into an inning-ending double play with one on and one out with the Mets up 5-4. Frankie pitched an easy 1-2-3 9th. You might be thinking that this isn't a big deal because the team also won the first games of the Orioles and Rays series and then went on to lose the last two. I'd say you're wrong. This team has been dealt its fair share crap luck this season- injuries obviously being the main concern. There's also the string of misplays- Castillo's dropped pop-up, Church missing third, to name the worst. With all of this, starting play tonight, the Mets are just a game and a half out of first place. This is in part to the Phillies having an awful couple of weeks and the fact that the NL East isn't doing all that great this year (the Nationals are probably going to lose over 100 games- though they beat the Yankees 2 out of 3...). Also, the team is up at the top of the League when it comes to average with runners in scoring position. They have the League's leading hitter for average (Mr. Wright). They are doing all of this with small ball too- which is nice to see. Homeruns are down throughout baseball (not as much of those...starts with ster, ends in oids), but the Mets are amongst the League lows in homeruns. Still, they're in the running. Daniel Murphy is becoming the hitter everyone was saying he could be now that he's out of the outfield and getting significant playing time (took you long enough Jerry). David Wright is truly the leader of the team now that he's carrying the line-up on his shoulders. He also confronted Mike Pelfrey after an ok outing that Wright thought Mike should have extended. Alex Cora is using his veteran status to his and the team's advantage. John Maine, Ollie Perez (good or bad?) and Billy Wagner are working their way back.
Today a radio station had a contest to win Mets tickets. The question was, "According to the Mets depth chart, who is the current back-up short stop to Alex Cora?" I called in, got through (!), and said Fernando Tatis. That answer was incorrect and I was all confused in the car, but when I got to work and checked, it turns out it was a trick question because the answer is nobody! Let's just hope that Cora doesn't get hurt.
