So great, the Yankees are 34-25. This is by far the team's best record at this point in a season in the last 3 years. It is also nice that Tex is having a phenomenal season. It is even nice that Alfredo Aceves has become Ramrio Mendoza 2K9. Heck, its even really cool that, unlike his predecessor "El Coma Dulce", Swisher actually seems to be interested in his job. But you know what, it feels pretty meaningless at 10:40 pm on Wednesday night. That is because the Yankees are 0-7 in the only games that really feel like they matter before July, those against the Boston Red Sox. First, Brett Gardner is the worst pinch runner of all time (the last two times he was put in with 1 or 0 outs, he didn't even attempt to steal even though he's one of the two or three fastest guys in the league). Second, A- Rod might as well be Tex's hitting coach because his only positive impact on the team so far is the fact that he is apparentley Mark's greatest inspiration. Third, G-d knows I had a huge man crush on CMW for years but its finally over. I never liked Hughes but he looks like he has finally turned the corner and its time to put him in the rotation and either release Wang or put him in the bullpen. It's sad that a guy who won 46 games from the start of 06 through the half-way point of 08 is now one of the league's worst 5th starters. However, more than all of this, It is terrifying to me that a team could be so psyched out by another team. Given that the Yanks are 34-18 against the rest of baseball, it is fair to say the Bronx Bombers are an elite club. It's got a good rotation, a great lineup, and a still excellent if not aging closer. However, if the Yanks club doesn't pull one out tomorrow night with its ace going against the Sox's worst, I am officially declaring a state of "Rivalry Emergency". Met fans may be doing this tonight after choking away a 3 run lead in the 7th to Philly and no doubt did this after that debacle of a choke job last season in which they coughed up a 3 run lead at home in the top of the 9th sometime in mid July. ( I remember, I was there) Put another way, its hard to fathom a club going 0-8 against its arch rival and not have that demoralize it's players going forward. Put still another way, YOU BETTER FUCKING WIN TOMORROW ASSHOLES.
