Ahh! Opening weekend. The opening day of the NFL season is an exciting time for everyone. The promise of a new season. The promise of a new beginning. The hope. The dreams. I don't know what I like most about it. Maybe, it’s that moment of thought in every fan’s mind that this could be the season no matter how dumb founded that notion may be. With all 32 teams now relevant also, it proves to be even more exciting time as fans and yinzers alike support their team to no ends and at least will go to local bars. It was nice seeing an assortment of jerseys Sunday afternoon. Everything has such a better feel too. The air is cleaner, the alcohol and the nachos are tastier and the aura of optimism filters throughout. Heck even bitter fanbases are less bitter. Every game is relevant and at least for a few weeks so is every team.

I got on my finest threads so let's make some snap observations regarding the first week of the NFL season.
All offseason, we've heard about teams without wide receivers are not going to go anywhere. This was made evident for anyone who watched the Giants, Ravens, Jets, etc. The "analysts" from all around the globe talking about the importance of wide receivers and especially known commodity. Giants were written off from playoff contention already because none of their receivers were good? Excuse me? Do people not remember the college game where Steve Smith dominated for USC. How about 2 years ago where Mario Manningham was the best receiver in college football and everyone said he was a sure fire #1 pick. And yea, don't worry if you have a good enough QB, you can make your receivers better.
Do people not remember the 2006 Patriots whose starting receivers were Jabar "good #4 wr" Gaffney and Reche "O_O" Caldwell? How about the 2005 Steelers with Hines Ward, Randle El and Cedrick Wilson. Not exactly, game breakers by any stretch of the imagination but good enough to win with. You don't need a #1 WR in the league either. I mean look at all the championships TO, Randy Moss have won. Good receivers are a luxury and not a necessity. More often than not, teams with good enough running games and great offensive lines can get away with it and still be successful. Depth is a good thing too and the Giants have that in spades. How about those teams with the great receivers? Wouldn't the Saints meet the Bengals in the Superbowl than every year? The answer, obviously, is no. If your line can give you 3-4 seconds, even your scrub receivers can beat NFL corners. It's just impossible for corners/safeties to stay latched on to people for so long. So have hope Giant fans because you'll be there in January.
Snap Judgements Because one game is all I have to go on:
- Either Joe Buck or Troy Aikman need to turn off their blackberries during broadcast. That thing was vibrating literally every 3 minutes. I was just jealous that my phone never blows up like that but that was just awful to watch. I got to say though, I thoroughly enjoyed the broadcast because Joe Buck's monotoneness were on mute.
- Josh McDaniels must have spent some extra time in church over the week as the not only did he get a gift of a win but with Jay Cutler looking like complete and utter dogshit shows that God does have a sense of humor and he does prefer assholes
- Being a Bengal fan has got to be the worst. That ending will be replayed in football history for all time.
- Roy Williams going for the big hit instead of knocking down a pass is a microcosm for his career
- That 5 year contract extension to Jake Delhomme is looking exceptionally brilliant when the last 2 games has produced 9 INTS for Delhomme. Delhomme was never great but always seemed like a dependable guy but is now showing that he can't win the big one despite getting to the superbowl. With that running game and offensive line, you'd think they'd be running more especially with him screwing the pooch the last couple of games. The sad thing for the Panthers is they won't have the opportunity to draft Delhomme's replacement and their future starter this year with the Everette Brown trade
- Reason #45890434132 I hate Fantasy Football: People now saying Drew Brees is the best QB in football. This is like in college football where Tim Tebow roasts the vaunted Troy defense to the tune of 6 Tds and people equate him to the pope. The sad part of that game was that despite all of Brees stats, the Saints still weren't comfortably ahead of the Lions who kept crawling back. Brees has yet to win anything of note and until he does that shouldn't be called the best at anything...and that he makes poor decisions at inopportune times.
- It's going to be interesting to see the Saints without a pass rush. Course people have been saying that for years.
- That Mike Vick signing looks better and better each passing day.
- Brett Favre should stop trying to hurt his new rookie receiver
- Romo is at his best in early September.
- Cadillac Williams: Comeback player of the year. Tremendous to watch him taking it to the Cowboys and running like a man possessed. Showed little to no effects of knee injuries.
- Terrible call of the week: Whoever called that direct snap on 4th down at the 30 yard line in the Bears/Packers game.
- The Packers defense is going to be scary in about 10 weeks. Just wait until BJ Raji starts playing. Cullen Jenkins devoured Bears RG, Frank Omiyale all night. Heck even AJ Hawk looked good.
- Colts still can't stop the run
- It's amazing how many coaches waste timeouts and why on earth is it so hard to get play calls in
- Matt Schaub definetely not Mr. September.
- I love teams having success on defense all game long yet going into a prevent late in games to maintain a lead. THE PREVENT doesn't even prevent anything.
- Giants vs. Redskins always play those close but not really close games.
If I listened to the media, I'd believe the following:
- Joe Flacco is now the best QB in the AFC North after playing the Kansas City Chiefs and a great offense.
- Arizona will have a superbowl hangover in the worst division in football
- The wildcat is dead
- Jets are going to the superbowl
- Jay Cutler sucks
- Kansas City won't be that bad
- San Francisco will make the playoffs
- Matt Forte is overrated
- Willie Parker is done
Jackass of the week:
- Micheal Crabtree -- You are a prime example on why everyone hates our entitled generation and you will cost yourself a bunch of money if you enter the draft again.
Jim Nantz and Phil Simms moment of the week:
- Showing the Patriot/Panther highlights in a Jets/Texan game that had to no relevance outside of a stadium. I hope to see CBS do that in other games this year but I doubt it.
What to look for tonight:
