The Anaheim Ducks have traded young defender Ryan Whitney and a 6th round pick to the Edmonton Oilers for veteran defenseman Lubomir Vishnovsky.
A surprising deal in a way in that Anaheim after only a season gave up on Whitney and dealt him for a veteran who is reaching the back end of his career. Anaheim definitely gets the better player as Whitney is prone to defensive lapses. In the fight for a playoff spot this is a good move by Anaheim as Vinovsky not only provides the same offense as Whitney, but provides far better defensive play along with experience and leadership.
Whitney has stalled in his development. Loaded with talent he does not seem to learn from his mistakes and it appears to have worn thin on both the teams that dealt him. That Anaheim was willing to deal him straight up should be telling to Whitney's problems.
Winner: Anaheim. Long term the Oilers may win, getting a younger player and freeing up some cap space, but short term this is definitely favored for Anaheim. If Whitney continues with his mental lapses and soft play, Anaheim will be the runaway winners.
